So, you want to know what in my opinion are the best Napoleon Total War units? Well, then I will give you (in my opinion), the top 10 units in Napoleon Total War.
Also, just a friendly reminder that these units are picked based on my experience and opinion from playing the game, so if you feel that you may disagree with one of the units I have listed, feel free to leave a comment with you opinion! Or if you really want to take it to the next level, let’s talk on the forums!
Napoleon Total War Factions
10. Mounted Cavalry Gunners
These guys were immediately an easy choice to add to number 10 on this list. Not only are they super cheap, but they can be highly effective in battle being able to rack up to 200 kills on average!
You see, these guys are just more than cavalry, imagine them as a shock infantry, or a really quick infantry. The kind that could skirmish and harass enemy lines while quickly running away with their horses.
If they however run out of ammo, or the tactic of shooting on horseback does not work well enough because your enemy is playing too defensively, you can always resort to the sabre! The charge bonus from this unit is phenomenal and you will find them holding their own in melee.
9. The Grand-Battery of Convention
Thanks to creative assembly everyone now has this unit since DLC’s were made all free! Now, this is quite an expensive piece of equipment, but it only takes one slot in your army composition. Meaning that if you are in a lobby where there is a rule on how much artillery you’re bringing, selecting this unit may give your side an edge of firepower!
Now if it is too expensive and you’re not looking to bring too many cannons you can always buy two artillery a pied. They will give you the same number of cannons for a slightly cheaper price, the downside is you will have slightly less crew and it takes up two slots in your army composition.
Besides the logistics aspect, there is not much more to say about this unit. Breathtaking range and you got 8 cannons that bark at your enemy as loud as 200 pit bulls and will tear their ranks like my fork tears through birthday cake. (Yes I eat cake with a fork, not a spoon).
8. Polish Guard Lancers
When thinking of the top 10 units in Napoleon Total War, these guys must be included in this list! The French are generally known to have quite an elite section of cavalry, and the Polish Guard Lancers only support that power.
The Polish Guard Lancers have undeniably the strongest charge in the game. It’s crucial that you don’t lose these gems by charging them into a square, and that you don’t leave them too long in melee as they should only be used for their high impact hits. Don’t believe me? Take a look at this next image and see the devastation of the Hungarian grenadiers when they got hit on their left flank by the Polish Guard.
7. Hungarian Grenadiers
Hungarian Grenadiers are not the best grenadiers in the game, but they’re worth for their value. Cheaper than the pavlovsk grenadiers, they will be as effective as them if not tired and used properly. This means minimal casualties, landing volleys, and excelling at melee.
Remember to consider the map and what your strategy will be before you begin to add these grenadiers into your army. The reason the Hungarian Grenadiers is on this list is because I believe they’re probably the best kind of grenadiers to get. However, be selective because all grenadier units come in smaller divisions!
6. Landesschutzen
Are you looking for extremely cheap skirmishers?
Well then, I recommend you the landesschutzen, they’re basically militia that know how to shoot and are able to spread out in light infantry mode. These units are one of the best in Napoleon total war just for the reason of how expendable they are as meat shields and how accurate they are.
I even had a battle where three of these units manage to take out an old guard! (Provided my general was close enough)
Napoleon Total War Map
The only downside with the Landesschutzen is that they are unable to spikes. But I think Creative Assembly new perfectly well that by giving them that ability, they’d be too over powered of a unit.
5. Light infantry (> Skirmishers)
If you don’t find yourself playing as Austria, it is to your benefit to mostly select light infantry over skirmishers unless you need pikes deployed somewhere on the map, and I’ll tell you why.
You get more men if you select light infantry rather than skirmishers. Sure you lack a little bit of accuracy, but more men = more fire power = higher enemy casualties. Of course you need to get closer and may suffer more, but with a strong line infantry foundation supporting them you can really punch holes into the enemy lines.
Furthermore, light infantry are more likely to survive and not immediately route from cavalry attacks, and are able to take more hits than skirmishers or units placed in a smaller retinue. So always be sure to grab these guys in your army!
Also, there is a DLC Russian unit known as the 17th Jager Regiment, they are also totally worth it given that Russia struggles a little bit with accuracy. It is not a skirmisher unit (Russia doesn’t have any) so you will be getting a full stack of light infantry with it! URA!
4. Foot Guards (Elite Line Infantry)
If you don’t have these in your army, it’d be pretty difficult to create a balanced force and be able to win the battle. Foot Guards from any country can mean the difference between a slim victory or a crushing defeat.
They will probably be the bulkiest and fastest shooters your army will have, and these are the guys that will cause the morale of your enemy units to drop after two devastating volleys. I could go on but I’ll probably write a separate article on how I use elite infantry and how they should be used. So, let’s move on!
3. 10th Hussars
Don’t let these gems fool you, they may be classified as hussars on the multiplayer lobby screen but in actuality they are shooter cavalry that excel at speed and shock combat.
These guys deserve a lot more praise and are more versatile than the regular shooter cavalry (and even the ottoman camel gunners). Whenever you play as Great Britain, be sure to have these guys in your deck!
2. Unicorns
No, I am not talking about the horses with a pointy horn coming out of their head. I am talking about these:
Battles have been lost because of these brutal machines, they’re ridiculously overpowered and can make your opponents rage quit within seconds of the battle just from seeing them.
If your goal is to make the map look like the surface of the moon, then go ahead and use these, but most hosts ban players from using them.
Be sure to also check out my guide on how to play as Russia in Napoleon Total War. I go more into depth about strategy and the types of troops you should be using.
1. The Old Guard
Well when we look at the top 10 units in Napoleon Total War, how can we not place the Old Guard unit at number 1? This freakish unit causes a morale drop to enemies because it’s reputation strikes fear into them, while also boosting the morale of friendly troops!
An extremely fast reload speed, exceptionally terrifying at melee, these troops excel anywhere on the battle field. Although pricey, they’re worth every bit of their value.
After all, this game is based on France and Napoleon, why wouldn’t he have the best troop?
